Consuming Self-Improvement Content

Why You SHOULD Consume

Do you ever want to start something new, you're all excited and motivated to do it and people always tell you to 'Take action' but just feel kinda lost?

Like you don't know where to start?

This sucks cause you know you want to learn and move forward and better your character but what do you actually need to do??

This is a problem I've faced at the Start of My Self-Improvement Journey and it beat me up a bit as I was stuck in an endless back and forth loop of Consuming Helpful Content and trying to 'TaKe AcTiOn',

But never actually knowing what action to take,

Nowadays this problem doesn't bother me anymore as I know how to tackle it,

And today I'm going to share with the the solution I found,

How to consume self-improvement content the RIGHT WAY.

Why Consuming Self-Improvement Content is Taboo

This type of content is a bit woo-hoo to some people as they don't like the idea of Deliberately looking to improve,

To them it's just somthing cringe and cliche and only meant for the weirdos and hippies.

I'll explain it to you because getting to these people's heads is like trying to ride and elephant through a roundabout, complete chaos.

You see, self-improvement and personal development can be quite childish and wishy washy I do admit,

It's like when a soccer mum shouts 'You can do it!', in that annoying kinda squeeky voice,

You know it's complete BS and is just lying to the kids,

I try not to do it like that,

I just look at it as actively improving different aspects of my life,

And then I share what I learn,

And there's nothing wrong with that.

But people still associate self-help with that soccer mum type of energy.

And it kinda annoys me a bit NGL.

How Content Has Helped Me

You see, you have everyone telling you that consuming content is bad,

Everyone's saying to;

  • Not watch videos
  • Not read books they're a waste of time
  • Don't go to lectures etc
  • 'These things don't get you results'

And while I do agree with that to a certain extent eventually I draw a line and say,

'But no, consuming self-improvement content has helped me, a lot,'

Books taught me more that I can even begin to type,

Videos gave me new perspectives and ideas and have served me a lot,

Lectures with great people have improved my mindset,

And I could go on,

So I say that not content per say is bad but;

  1. The type of content you watch
  2. What you do with it

These 2 will make the difference between getting results and being just another guy watching 'educational' videos but never actually does anything.

Now this is kinda Contradicting to What I wrote in a Previous Article as I wrote that you should take action. I'm getting to that part.

The Problem of Too Much or Too Little Content Consumption

There are 2 sides to this,

Either people who JUST watch content and never actually do anything with it,

Or,

People who JUST take action but never actually taking the correct one.

Here's how you can be the guy who's 'Just right'.

Understand that consuming content is not bad,

It's actually Necessary,

If you never actually Learn through consuming content how will you know what action to take?

Business for example, now,

People tell you to start a business, great,

  • What business do you want to start?
  • What problems do you want to solve?
  • Is it a physical busines or something online?
  • How do you start?

These are all things you need to have figured out before the 'taking action' part.

before taking action you need to know the action steps

And you discover those action steps by doing research like consuming content.

'You can learn a lot from people who are more advanced than you who post their knowledge online and you would benefit a lot if you take a look at it.'

If there's someone who already did what you want to do you might as well follow in his steps cause the path is already built,

It would be just making your life harder by ignoring these people to just 'Take action',

So choose the correct content to see online and use it as a map to guide you to what action you should take.

The Problem With This

Now, the problem with consuming content, (although it only comes if you consume too much),

Is if you are never actually using the content that you consume,

You are watching videos and reading books and articles to learn so that you can improve your life,

But you need to actually use what you learn.

It's a great thing that you're watching self-help videos and concepts,

First they will change your beliefs and teach you new things and then, eventually, you'll use those things practically in your own life,

But that latter part has to come eventually, you can't just 'keep learning' forever cause at the end of the day action brings results.

But then you need to know what action to take so you're not wasting your time.

Research and Learning make sure you're doing the right thing,

Action makes sure you're doing the thing.

A constant cycle of learn and implement.

Never forget this, it's common sense to intelligent people, so I'd assume that you understood it, if you didn't then I would reread this article if I were you. Not for my sake, but for your own.

Summary :

  • Content is not like everyone says, it's not all bad. Choose valuable content to consume.
  • Consuming self-improvement content has helped me and will help you as well.
  • Learn from people who have already done it.
  • Through content you learn how stuff works and what you need to do.
  • At the end of the day you're researching your topic to take action on it, don't forget that.
  • Results come from action. So take action.
  • Correct action comes from research, so research.
